Blessings and Benefits

One of the most beloved Psalms. Biblical doctrine for the forgiveness of sins. Promises of God for those who obey Him. Sovereignty of God. Character of God. Story of the Scottish preacher and the row boat.

Text: Psalm 103

Our Lord has given us so much to be grateful for. In this beloved Psalm of David, we learn first hand about the generous actions that our Lord has taken for our welfare.

Moreover, David sets forth the biblical basis for the forgiveness of sins, the promises of God for those who obey Him, and the stability of God’s rule over the heavens and the earth. It is an absolutely stunning testimony to the goodness of God.

David probably wrote this Psalm near the end of his earthly life. He had suffered much throughout the years, but he had also been blessed much. Overall, from the depths of his own soul, he purposed to bless the Lord for all that He has done.

The Glories of Our Covenant Keeping God: Part 2

Text: Micah 7

Today we conclude our study of Micah’s prophecy. Rest assured, though, that this is not the conclusion of all the specific details of Micah’s prophecy! Certain portions of his message were fulfilled during the time of the Old Testament (e.g. the return of the remaining exiles from Jerusalem led by Zerubbabel in 538 BC). Yet, other portions were fulfilled during the time of the New Testament (e.g. the grafting of the Gentiles into Israel; se Micah 2:12, 4:7, 5:7-8, 7:18; John 19:16; Acts 15:1-35; Rom. 11:5, 11-24; and Gal. 3:29).

However, there are other portions that have yet to be fulfilled; both God’s judments and deliverances. Through all these events, both past and future, we see the faithfulness of our covenant-keeping God. The relationship that he has established by grace with Abraham and his spiritual decendants, still continues on (cf. Gen. 15:1-21). The Lord is our God and we are his people!

The Glories of our Covenant Keeping God: Part 1

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

He keeps the covenant when we can’t keep it for ourselves. Doctrine is like the bones in your body, scripture is like the flesh. Both are needed to make up the whole person. Familial difficulties. Christ: an aroma of life to some, an aroma of death to others. A vision or purpose statement for your life. Christ on the throne of your life. Promises of God. David Livingstone.

Text: Micah 7

As we come to the end of Micah’s prophecy we are treated to a brief survey of the glories of our covenant keeping God. Central to these divine characteristics is the fact that God keeps the terms of his covenant with fallen mankind. In other words, besides giving the law he also graciously fulfills all of its stringent conditions by sending one who perfectly kept the law–the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thus, despite man’s flagrant disobedience, the Lord sends forth a Savior so that his remnant will be saved (cf. Micah 2:12, 4:7, 5:7-8, 7:18). This evangelical truth should give us much assurance in regard to our own salvation, because it is based solely upon the gracious work of the Lord.

Whatever difficulty the Lord might providentially decree in the years ahead, let us make it our aim to “look to the Lord” and know that he will certainly “hear” us when we call upon him. Such is our confidence in the Lord.
