What Does the Lord Require?

Text: Micah 6:1-16

We return today to the exposition of the Prophet Micah. He asks a noteworthy question: “What does the Lord require?” This question appears only once before in the Bible when Moses asks,

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statues of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good? (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)

This was a timely question for the people of Israel to consider before they went across the Jordan River into the Promised Land (c. 1400 B. C.). would they remain faithful to the Lord while the sought to reform a culture that had fallen into idolatry, wickedness, and deceit?

His answer goes straight to the heart of the relationship between a Holy God and fallen man; without a profound spiritual change such a relationship is impossible. Moreover, it is important to note that this relationship is based on the work of a Mediator who exemplifies justice, loving kindness, and humility.

Seven Ways for a Husband to Encourage the Spirit of His Wife

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Text: 1 Peter 3:7-9

Life doesn’t always boil down to a simple mathematical formula, but in the case of Christian marriage the following really works:

Spiritual Regeneration + Biblical Reconstruction = Marital Reformation

So, who is this message for? It is for the discouraged wife who wonders if her husband will ever learn to communicate with her. It is for the frustrated husband who doesn’t understand his wife’s way of thinking and acting. It is for perplexed, concerned children who want to be an encouragement to their fathers and mothers. It is for those who are not currently married as they contemplate a future marriage.

The Lord has specifically designed marriages to work and not to be failures (see Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:3-12). Listen and learn from the Bible about how Christian marriage can truly be blessed by the Lord.

Men–make it your purpose and pattern to be a blessing to your wife, if you want to receive a blessing from your wife.

Devoted to the Things of God

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

The state of the modern church: bored with Jesus Christ. Lost it’s sense of “taste”. Definition of an apostle. If we love Jesus, we will love what he has taught us. Purpose of Christian Fellowship. The Lord’s Supper gives spiritual nourishment to fight against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Prayer is the way we communicate trust, love and submission to God. Luther’s pattern of prayer. We are called to be glad in the Lord.

Text: Acts 2:40-47

Guest Preacher, Pastor Jeff Yelton.

In 2 Samuel 19:35, Barzillai is offered the opportunity to sit at King David’s table in Jerusalem, eating David’s food, and enjoying fellowship with him. But Barzillai is old, and he has lost his sense of taste. He cannot enjoy what David offers him, and so rejects David’s offer.

Instead, Barzillai’s son will have what Barzillai did not. God offers his people the opportunity to enjoy the things of God, but the people of God must have a taste for these things, and for God himself.

Modern Christians have lost the ability to enjoy these things, but we must imitate the biblical church, and devote ourselves to apostolic doctrine, the fellowship, the Lord’s Supper, and prayer, all of which God offers to us for our enjoyment. God reveals himself in these things, and we find him there.

Since our Lord Jesus has given us apostolic doctrine, fellowship, the Lord’s supper, and prayer, we must devote ourselves to these things.

The Coming Kingdom of Our Lord: Part 3

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Twin themes in Micah–Judgment and Deliverance. Resting in God’s peace though the fears of life. God’s covenant promises. Covenant keepers vs. covenant breakers. God prospers His people even in the midst of corporate judgment. There will always be opposition to God’s word. Where does our confidence lie? John Wesley preaching on his father’s tombstone. The Lord will not forsake His people. Grab ahold of Christ.

Text: Micah 5:1-15

We return to our study of the Prophet Micah and his message about the coming kingdom of our Lord.

In chapter 4 we noted Micah’s vision of the Lord’s House, the Lord’s People, and the Lord’s Victory. We also discussed how this kingdom actually began with the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus (cf. Mk. 1:14-15; Gal. 4:4-5). And even though it is a kingdom that is already hear, it is also one that is not yet fulfilled.

In other words, it is already, but not yet.

Thus, the kingdom of Jesus Christ will be consummated when we sit and celebrate the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (cf. Matt 22:2; Rev. 19:1-10). We should also observe that as history slowly unfolds our Lord brings about multiple fulfillments of his prophetic writings, until all is completely fulfilled on the Last Day.

This is the exciting vision of Micah 4-5.
